Cross country program announces 2011 incoming freshman class

VESTAL, N.Y.—The Binghamton cross country program will have nine newcomers for the upcoming 2011 campaign. Included in the class are six freshmen for the men’s team and two first-year runners for the women’s squad. The women also landed a junior transfer. Cal Michaels (Apalachin, N.Y.) was a New York State Sports Writers’ Association (NYSSWA) first-team Class AA all-state pick as a senior at nearby Vestal High School. He placed sixth at the New York State (NYS) Class AA Championships and seventh at the NYS Federation Meet. At last month’s NYS Outdoor Meet, Michaels was fourth overall in the 3,000 Steeplechase. His top time in that event is 9:27. Matt Johnson (Ithaca, N.Y.) was a NYSSWA Class AA first-team all-state selection as a senior at Ithaca High School. At the 2010 NYS FederationMeet he was 10th overall. In addition, he was fourth at the Class AA meet and 14th at the Nike Regional Meet. In track, Johnson has run 9:44 in the 3,000 Steeplechase. Collin Frost (Randolph, N.J.) was a second-team All-State selection by the Star Ledger as a senior. He placed ninth overall at the 2010 New Jersey Meet of Champions. During the 2011 track season, he was third overall in the 3,200 at both the indoor and outdoor Meet of Champions. At the New Balance Indoor National meet, he was 13th overall in the same event. Frost’s top times are 9:07 in the 3,200 and 4:15 in the 1,600. Jesse Garn (Marcellus, N.Y.) was a NYSSWA first-team Class B all-state selection as a senior at Marcellus High School. He placed fifth overall at the 2010 Class B meet in the 1,600. Garn was the NYS Indoor Track Champion in the 1,000 and placed eighth in the 800 at the New Balance Indoor Track National Meet. In addition, he was sixth in the mile at the NYS Outdoor Track Championship last month. Garn’s top time in the 1,600 is 4:13. Andrew Roache (Fayetteville, N.Y.) was a NYSSWA Class AA third-team all-state pick as a senior. He placed ninth overall at the Nike Regional Meet and competed at the 2010 Nike/New Balance Cross Country National Championships. Roache’s top time in the 3,200 is 9:20. Jared Rousell (Webster, N.Y.) was a NYSSWA 10th-team All-State selection as a junior at Webster-Thomas. During the 2011 outdoor track season, he was second overall in the 3,000 Steeplechase at the NYS Meet and fourth overall in the 2,000 Steeplechase at the Nike New Balance National Outdoor Meet. Rousell’s top time in the 3,000 Steeplechase is 9:23. On the women’s side, Megan Jacoby (Endwell, N.Y.) is a junior transfer from the University of Connecticut. She is a 2009 graduate of nearby Maine-Endwell High School, where she was a second-team NYSSWA Class B All-State selection her junior and senior seasons. As a freshman at UConn, she placed a team-best 54th out of 136 runners for UConn at BIG EAST Championships. Jessica Falcon (Stony Point, N.Y.) was a 2010 Class AA state meet qualifier at North Rockland High School. Her top time in the 2,000 Steeplechase is 7:16. Kerri Valero (Niskayuna, N.Y.) ran cross country and track for Niskayuna High School. Her top track times were 3:03.3 in the 1,000 and 4:50.08 in the 1,500. Binghamton starts its 2011 season with a tri-meet at Cornell on Sept. 9.
