Track & field teams earn USTFCCCA All-Academic honors

Comments

VESTAL, N.Y.—Adam Quinn may have graduated two months ago but he continues to pile up the academic honors from his career at Binghamton. On Wednesday, he was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Track & Field Team for the 2011-12 season. In addition, both the men’s and women’s Bearcats squads received All-Academic status for the year.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including at the East or West Regionals).

Quinn qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships in the 3,000 Steeplechase for the second year in a row. He placed a career-best 27th overall with a time of 9:05.81. Earlier in the outdoor season, Quinn was the runner-up in the 3,000 steeplechase at the America East Championships. In the process, he earned all-conference honors for the second year in a row. Quinn concluded his career as a three-time all-conference selection, having also been the runner up in the 5,000 at the 2012 conference indoor meet.

The USTFCCCA accolade is the latest in a string of academic honors Quinn has earned during his final collegiate season. He was the America East’s Indoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was also named to the Capital One/COSIDA Academic All-District Team.

Quinn concluded his career as an 11-time America East Conference medalist, a three-time runner up as well as a three-time all-conference selection. He also was a five-time All-Academic Team. With Quinn as one of the mainstays in the Binghamton distance program, the men’s cross country team won the 2009 America East title and was the runner up at the 2010 meet.

The Binghamton men’s team as a whole also concluded an impressive season both on the track and in the classroom. It finished the 2011-12 academic year with a 3.11 overall GPA, which surpassed the other eight schools in the America East Conference. After placing third at the conference indoor meet, the Bearcats were the runner up at the America East Outdoor Meet for the third year in a row.

Equally as impressive this year was the Binghamton women’s track & field program. In addition to recording a 3.28 overall GPA, the women placed third overall at the America East Outdoor Championships, which tied the highest finish in program history. The 2002 squad also placed third.

The minimum GPA for a team to earn All-Academic status from the USTFCCCA was a 3.0.
