VESTAL, N.Y.—Erik van Ingen, who recently concluded a stellar athletic career at Binghamton, will compete in the men’s 1,500 at the U.S. Olympic Trials this week. The 11-day event, which is currently in progress, is being held at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. van Ingen is scheduled to take part in the first of three rounds on Thursday, June 28 at 7:20 EST. The top 24 times will advance to the semifinals, which will be held the following day at 7:25 p.m. EST. From there, the top 12 performers will advance to the finals, which will take place on Sunday, July 1 at 7:37 EST. The top three finishers in the finals will qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team. The 2012 Summer Olympic Games will be held in London, England July 27-August 12. The NBC Sports Netword (NBCSN) will air the semifinals live and NBC will televise the finals live. “I am really excited for Erik,” Binghamton assistant coach Annette Acuff said. “He has had a great career at Binghamton and deserves this opportunity.” van Ingen is a four-time, first-team track & field All-American. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, he was fifth in the mile at the 2011 meet and seventh this past year. After a sixth-place finish in the 1,500 at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships, van Ingen was eighth in the 2012, which was held earlier in the month at Drake University. Among the top entries in the 1,500 are 2008 Olympians Lopez Lomong and Leo Manzano, David Torrence as well as 2011 World Championships bronze medalist Matthew Centrowitz, who won the 2011 NCAA outdoor title in the 1,500 while competing for the University of Oregon. van Ingen is the second Binghamton track & field athlete to take part in the U.S. Olympic Trials. Rory Quiller, who won the 2008 NCAA indoor title in the pole vault, competed in the Olympic Trials four months later. He will compete again this year, taking part in the pole vault finals on Thursday at 8:05 p.m. EST. In its history, Binghamton has had four of its athletes take part in the Olympics either before or after their collegiate careers. John Moreau competed in fencing for the U.S. in the 1984 games, which were held in Los Angeles, California. Chris Coleman took part in the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympic Games in the bobsledding events. Before arriving at Binghamton, Yun Qu competed for her native China in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. She was fourth in the 100 butterfly. Hui-Jue Cai, meanwhile, also swam for China in 1996 and earned a bronze medal in the 4x100 relay. NOTES: Acuff will accompany van Ingen out to the Olympic Trials ... the 1992 Winter Olympics were held in Albertsville, France and the 1994 Games were held in Lillehammer, Norway.
