BLOOMINGTON, IND.—Freshman Jesse Garn finished third overall in the finals of the 800 at the the USA Junior National Track & Field Championships. The three-day, which concludes on Sunday, is being hosted by Indiana University. In a photo finish, Garn’s time of 1:49.82 was eclipsed only by Shaquille Walker of BYU (1:49.39) and Tanner Sork, who ran unattached (1:49.57). Walker and Sork will advance to the World Junior Championships, which will be held July 10-15 in Barcelona, Spain. Garn, meanwhile, will be the first alternate. The USA Junior National Meet concludes an outstanding rookie campaign for Garn, who was the bronze medalist out of 25 total entries at the meet. On Friday, he recorded the fastest preliminary time (1:50.19). “This meet was a great opportunity for Jesse to compete against some of the best junior national level 800 runners,” assistant coach Annette Acuff said before the race. ” I’m really excited for him to have this opportunity and experience. He’s already had a great freshman year with us with his school record time of 1:48.85 in the 800. This is great improvement from his high school best at 1:53.15.” During the 2012 outdoor track season, Garn advanced to the NCAA East Regional finals in the 800 and in the preliminary round, recorded the second-fastest overall time (1:48.85). At the America East Outdoor Meet, he was third overall in the 1,500, earning all-conference honors in the process. During the indoor season, Garn was sixth overall in the mile. A 2011 graduate of Marcellus High School, Garn has grown accustomed to competing at the national level. In his senior year, he placed eighth overall in the 800 at the New Balance Indoor National Meet. He also captured the 2011 New York indoor state title in the 1,000. The USA Junior National Track & Field Championships are open to any American athlete under the age of 20 during the season in which the meet takes place.
