Track & field lands conference-best six America East All-Academic selections

Comments
VESTAL, N.Y.—Seniors Jesse Fuca, Kaitlin Sullivan, Adam Quinn and Robb Quiller as well as juniors Jessica Hennig and Rachel Miura have all been named to the 2012 America East Outdoor Track All-Academic squad. Binghamton led the conference with three men’s picks and tie Vermont for tops in the America East with three selections. “I am proud that our athletes are successful on the track and in the classroom,” head coach Mike Thompson said. “Binghamton is a strong academic institution and these student-athletes have proven that you do not have to sacrifice academics to be a successful athlete.” Fuca, who was also named to the All-Academic squad for the indoor season, won the 110 hurdles at the America East Outdoor Championships three weeks ago. He was also eighth in the 400 hurdles. Sullivan earns her first selection after leading the Bearcat women’s squad to a program-best third place finish at the recent outdoor conference meet. She won the 100 hurdles, was fifth in the 400 hurdles and ran the anchor leg on the second-place 4x400 relay. Hennig makes her third appearance on an All-Academic team, but just her first during the outdoor season. The three-time defending America East indoor champion in the 400 won her first outdoor title in the same event this season. She also joined Sullivan on the runner-up 4x400 relay team. Quiller has now been named to the All-Academic Team four times during his career, including both times this season. After tying for third in the pole vault at the conference indoor meet, he was second at the America East Outdoor Championships. Quinn is now a three-time America East All-Academic selection. The current America East Men’s Indoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year placed second in the 3,000 Steeplechase at the America East Outdoor Meet. On Friday, he will compete in the same event at the East Regional Championships for the second year in a row. Miura makes her debut on the America East All-Academic Team. She was second overall in the 10,000 at the conference outdoor meet. In order to be eligible for the America East All-Academic Teams, a student-athlete must have an overall GPA of 3.3 and have been a key performer at the recent America East Conference Meet. All six Binghamton selections earned all-conference honors at the meet. Three won individual titles while the other three were runners up. Furthermore, all six are members of the National College Athlete Honor Society, which requires a minimum overall GPA of 3.4 Binghamton’s men’s squad was the runner up at the America East Outdoor Championships for the third year in a row. The women’s team’s previous best showing at an America East outdoor meet came in 2005, when it finished fourth. Quinn will join fifth-year senior Erik van Ingen and freshman Jesse Garn at the East Regional Meet, which will be held at North Florida starting on Thursday.
