Senior Spotlight: Five Questions with Robyn Schaefer

Comments

New Paltz athletic communications intern Ava Yurchison caught up with senior Robyn Schaefer of the New Paltz women's cross country team for the week 10 release of the 2015-16 Senior Spotlight series that will have a new senior interviewed every Monday.Q: Why did you come to New Paltz?A: "I came to New Paltz because I came on a recruit trip senior year, and I had a friend who went here who was on the team. We ran in the mountains, and I knew that it was the only place like this. It was a great area to run in, and I knew that I would enjoy it more."Q: Can you elaborate on your earliest memory running competitively?A: "I remember being on this team called [the] 'Golden Girls.' I was in fifth grade and doing a sprinting race. I started off so strong, it was probably like a 200, and I was leading the pack. I felt so awesome. Then, all of a sudden, all of the girls who actually knew how to sprint, beat me. At that point I was like 'Wow, I am not supposed to be a sprinter. Maybe I should do longer races.'"Q: Do you have any race day preparations?A: "I always try to get a good night's sleep two days before, and make sure I am eating the right things. I also, especially before a race, I like to go over each lap in my head and what I will be thinking and stuff like that."Q: What is the biggest adversity you have faced since being here?A: "I think being on the team coming from my high school coach. My high school coach was a lot different from my college coach. I had to gain his trust in a different way from my high school coach, and I'm still working on it. But it is getting better and has gotten better throughout the years."
